The definition
A liquidation pallet is a quantity of retail goods sold as a single lot, usually because the original retailer wanted the space more than the stock. The goods are customer returns, overstock, shelf pulls or discontinued lines, stacked on a pallet and sold by the load rather than by the item.
The defining feature is that it is priced as a lot. You are not buying individual products at a discount, you are buying a quantity of unsorted goods at a price that reflects the sorting nobody has done.
Manifested and unmanifested
A manifested load comes with an itemised contents list. An unmanifested load does not, and no list exists anywhere, because producing one means opening and cataloguing the stock.
Unmanifested loads are cheaper for exactly that reason. Any piece count on an unmanifested listing is an estimate of what a load of that type usually holds, not a guarantee.
The vocabulary you will meet
Shelf pull: removed from sale, usually fine, packaging often not. Customer return: came back from a buyer, condition unknown. Overstock: never sold, generally the cleanest. Salvage: damaged, sold as such. Gaylord: the large box a loose load arrives in. Case pack: sealed multiples of one item.
Sellers use these words precisely, and a listing that avoids them entirely is worth a second look.
Who they are for
Resellers who sell at volume and can price for variance. Marketplace sellers, bin stores, market traders and discount retailers all buy this way.
They are not for anyone who needs to know the contents in advance. That is a different product, it is called graded stock, and it costs more because someone did the work.
How a load reaches you
A retailer clears stock in bulk to a liquidator. The liquidator sells it on by the truckload, and truckloads are split into pallet lots. Each step takes a margin and none of them opens the goods, because opening them is the expensive part.
By the time a pallet is listed, several companies have handled it and none has catalogued it. That is why the price is low and why the contents are unknown to everyone in the chain, sellers included.
What varies, and by how much
The condition mix, the piece count, and the proportion of any load that is worth listing individually. None of the three is fixed, and a seller quoting all three precisely on an unmanifested load is quoting an average as though it were a promise.
Variance falls as you buy more loads in the same category. One load can be unlucky. Ten average out, which is the actual mechanism behind every reseller who makes this work.
The common misunderstanding
People expect a liquidation pallet to be a discounted version of retail stock. It is not. It is unsorted residual inventory sold at a price that reflects the work nobody has done to it.
Understood that way, the product makes sense and the price is fair. Understood as cheap retail goods, it will disappoint every time.
