What drives the price
Three things set the price of a liquidation pallet: the category, the condition basis, and how much sorting has already been done. A mixed general merchandise pallet is cheaper per unit than a single-category electronics load. An unmanifested load is cheaper than a graded one, because grading is the expensive part.
Freight is the fourth factor and the one most often left out of a comparison. A pallet with freight quoted separately is not comparable to one with freight included until you have both numbers.
Judge it per unit, landed
The headline price tells you very little. Take the total, include freight, and divide by the low end of the stated piece count. That is the number to compare across sellers, and it is the number your resale maths has to clear.
Then discount it further for the share of any load that will not be sellable. A load is not 100 units of stock, it is a distribution.
What the ranges tend to look like
Small mixed pallets sit at the entry end and are the sensible way to test a category. Mid-range loads are big enough to justify the freight without tying up much capital. Large loads and truckloads price better per unit and demand space, labour and a route to market before you buy.
Anything priced far below the rest of the market deserves a question rather than an order. In this trade a price that looks too good usually reflects condition nobody has disclosed.
Costs people forget
Storage, the labour to sort, packaging for resale, marketplace fees, and the stock that never sells. A load that looks profitable on the purchase price alone often is not once those are counted.
Also count your own time. Sorting is real work, and the discount you are getting is precisely the payment for it.
Category by category, roughly
General merchandise sits at the low end per unit because the items are small and numerous. Apparel is similar by piece but heavier per pallet, which matters when freight is priced in. Tools and home improvement carry higher per-unit costs and better resale. Electronics is the highest per unit and the highest variance in both directions.
Mystery and unclaimed-parcel loads price by weight or by box rather than by category, and should be judged as entertainment inventory rather than stock.
Why two sellers quote wildly different prices
Usually one includes freight and the other does not. After that, it is condition basis: a graded load costs more because someone did the sorting. After that, it is load size, since per-unit cost falls as the lot grows.
If none of those explain the gap, ask what the cheap seller’s claims policy says. Price is often the first place a weak policy shows up.
The number that actually decides it
Landed cost per unit against your realistic sell-through rate. If a load costs you four dollars a unit and your category clears at fifteen with a third written off, it works. If it costs you eleven a unit in the same category, it does not, and no amount of good sorting will fix it.
