Where to Buy Things in Bulk to Resell. This guide is written for resellers, and it says what we would tell a customer on the phone. If you are working out where to buy things in bulk to resell, the short version is below and the detail follows. Nothing here is a pitch for a particular load.
Liquidation wholesalers. Pallets and truckloads of returns, overstock and shelf pulls. Lowest cost per unit, highest variance, no contents list.
Traditional wholesale distributors. New stock, known contents, minimum order quantities and far thinner margins.
Closeout and overstock brokers. Sit between the two: known goods, discounted because a line ended or an order fell through.
Auctions and estate sales. Unpredictable supply, but occasionally the best per-unit prices you will find.
If you sell on marketplaces and can photograph and list quickly, liquidation loads give the best margin for the effort. If you need to restock the same item repeatedly, a distributor is the only option that can do it.
Most resellers who last end up using two sources: something predictable to keep listings alive, and liquidation loads for margin.
Whether the stock is manifested, what condition basis it is sold on, whether freight is included, and what happens if the load arrives damaged. Those four answers tell you more about a seller than any amount of marketing copy.
Watch for stated retail values. A seller quoting what a load is supposedly worth at retail is not giving you information, they are anchoring your price expectation.
Buy one load in a category you already understand. Sell it through completely before buying another, and count your actual hours. The second purchase should be informed by real numbers rather than the first one’s excitement.
Volume solves variance. A single load can be unlucky; ten loads in the same category average out.
Liquidation loads give the lowest cost per unit and the least certainty. Closeout brokers sit in the middle on both. Distributors give certainty and the thinnest margin. Auctions swing wildly and cannot be planned around.
There is no source that gives you low cost and high certainty at once. What you are choosing is which of the two your business can survive without.
Marketplace sellers listing individually do best on liquidation loads, because the sorting labour they are already doing is exactly what the discount pays for. Subscription and repeat-purchase models need distributors, since a customer who cannot reorder is a customer lost.
Bin stores and market traders sit at the far end: they want the cheapest possible unit cost and have a route to market for the tail nobody else wants.
Whatever the source, get the condition basis, the freight arrangement and the claims window written down before you pay. Verbal reassurance from a salesperson is not a policy, and the point at which you need one is precisely the point at which they stop taking your calls.
A supplier who publishes their terms on the site is telling you something useful about how they intend to behave when a load goes wrong.
If you take one thing from this page, take this: the price of a liquidation load is the payment for work nobody has done to it. Nothing is opened, graded or sorted before it ships, and that is exactly why it costs what it costs. Judge every load on landed cost per unit, assume a share of it will not sell, and buy from a seller whose terms are written down before you pay.
To see live loads, the category pages list everything we currently have, with the condition basis and the price on each listing. Our other guides cover pricing, freight and the red flags worth walking away from, and the glossary defines every term used above. Our full shipping and returns terms are published in full, which is the same standard we suggest you hold any seller to when working out where to buy things in bulk to resell.
