What Is a Liquidation Store. This guide is written for resellers, and it says what we would tell a customer on the phone. If you are working out what is a liquidation store, the short version is below and the detail follows. Nothing here is a pitch for a particular load.
A liquidation store sells goods that came out of the retail chain before they reached a customer, or came back from one. That includes customer returns, overstock, shelf pulls, discontinued lines and closeout inventory. The store buys it in bulk at a fraction of its original wholesale cost and sells it individually.
The model works because the original retailer values shelf space more than the residual value of the stock. Clearing it in bulk is cheaper for them than processing it item by item.
A liquidation store sells mixed stock at fixed prices, sorted to some degree by whoever runs it.
A bin store tips unsorted stock into bins and drops the price through the week, starting high on restock day and falling to a dollar or two by the end. The sorting is done by the customer.
An outlet is usually the brand’s own channel for last-season or excess stock, which is a different supply chain entirely and generally cleaner goods.
Most independent liquidation stores buy pallets and truckloads from liquidation wholesalers rather than direct from retailers. Direct relationships exist but tend to require volume and consistency that a single store cannot offer.
That is why a store’s stock looks the way it does: it is whatever came in the last load, which is why the mix changes week to week and why regulars come back to check.
The stock is the easy part. The hard parts are floor space, the labour to sort and price, and a location with enough passing trade to clear the long tail. Most people underestimate how much of a load is not worth putting on a shelf.
Start by reselling loads online before committing to a lease. It tests your sourcing and your pricing without the fixed costs.
Most liquidation stores price on a simple multiple of what they paid per unit, adjusted by how fast the stock moves. Items that photograph well and sell online are often pulled out and listed separately, and the floor gets the rest.
The margin is not in any single item. It is in buying loads cheaply enough that the unsellable share does not matter, and clearing stock fast enough that the floor keeps turning over.
Because the supply is whatever came off the last truck. A liquidation store does not reorder a product, it buys a load. That is why regulars visit repeatedly and why restock day is the busiest day of the week for most of them.
It also means a store cannot promise you a specific item will be there. Anyone running one learns quickly to sell the experience rather than the inventory.
Consistent volume in a category the floor can absorb. A store running out of stock mid-week is a store losing money on its lease, so most buy on a schedule rather than opportunistically.
If you are supplying rather than running one, that is the useful thing to know: they buy for predictable throughput, not for the best single deal.
If you take one thing from this page, take this: the price of a liquidation load is the payment for work nobody has done to it. Nothing is opened, graded or sorted before it ships, and that is exactly why it costs what it costs. Judge every load on landed cost per unit, assume a share of it will not sell, and buy from a seller whose terms are written down before you pay.
To see live loads, the category pages list everything we currently have, with the condition basis and the price on each listing. Our other guides cover pricing, freight and the red flags worth walking away from, and the glossary defines every term used above. Our full shipping and returns terms are published in full, which is the same standard we suggest you hold any seller to when working out what is a liquidation store.
